Grab a fresh-baked treat today to celebrate National Pastry Day, which brings word of expansion from an acclaimed local bakery. Pâtisserie Mélanie, which got its start in Hillcrest in early 2018, will be moving into a larger space in North Park on 30th Street; the new cafe is set to open Summer 2020.
Formerly a teacher at an area high school, chef/owner Melanie Dunn pursued her passion for baking to Paris, attending summer classes at Le Cordon Bleu and earning her Diplôme de Pâtisserie. Making small batches of pastries out of her home kitchen, Dunn has been running a jewel box-size boutique dessert shop out of the ground floor of her live/work space on Park Boulevard.
The incoming 1,500-square-foot cafe and kitchen in North Park will enable the chef to offer coffee service as well as breakfast and lunch menus in addition to her popular viennoiserie and other sweet treats. Known for croissants, kouign-amanns, canneles, tarts, and cookies, Pâtisserie Mélanie will be adding other classic French specialties including eclairs, Paris-Brest, and Gateau St. Honoré as well as brioche with seasonal jam, quiche, and croque monsieur or madame sandwiches; the cafe will also feature a “formule” menu, a prix-fixe luncheon based on daily specials.
Working with architect Tony Garcia of A2 Studios, who won the 2018 National AIA Young Architects Award and designed the legendary Thomas Keller’s Bouchon bakery in Napa Valley, Dunn also plans to host pastry classes, pop-up-dinners, and private events in the space.
The original bakery, currently open Wednesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., will remain in operation until the launch of the North Park location.
