An award-winning Lincolnshire business owner who makes ‘amazing’ cakes is set to appear on Channel 5’s The Wonderful World of Cakes in April next year.
Hayley O’Biernes from Gainsborough recently re-launched her cake company, Gadget Cakes, which specialises in unique cake designs, including moving mechanical cakes.
“For me a cake has to not only look and taste good, it has to be memorable. I like them to have a theatrical performance about them,” Hayley said.
“I started out with simple lights and a record your own message cake. Then slowly over the years started playing around with broken toys and electrical circuits.”
So far, her cakes have only been seen by neighbours and friends here in Lincolnshire, but she says the reception has been brilliant.
“I love seeing people’s faces when they expect to see a normal cake and then I make it light up, install sounds and best of all, add movement into it,” she said.
Nicknamed the “cake mechanic” within the business, Hayley uses motors, gears and pulleys to create the moving parts, often making mechanisms, such as the ones inside her life-sized reindeer cake, entirely from scratch.
Among Hayley’s other impressive sweet treats are Esme the Walking Unicorn, a tattoo cake with a working tattoo gun attached and a remote-control car cake.
“Eventually I’d like my own shop as I’ve already had to build a shed just to make the frames for my life-sized cakes and I’m still running out of space,” Hayley said.
This will not be the first time a cake Hayley created will be on TV, as a huge 8ft mechanical dragon that she worked on with two other creators appeared on an episode of Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers.
While Hayley can’t give away too much, she says the new series will feature many other cake artists and will air at Easter time next year.
Hayley is training to be a judge at cake competition Cake International, as well as making plans for her wedding cake next June, which will be a large car with all members of ACDC on top and will drive into the venue by remote control.
She also offers free tutorials on her Facebook page, as well as running her own private cake classes alongside teaching at an adult education centre.
