Blondie Smith is taking her catering know-how to the next level with Feed Your Soul.
In November, she opened the soul food restaurant at 421 Friendship Road in Swatara Township, dishing out hearty specialties such as fried chicken, smothered pork chops, burgers and sweet potato pie. She’s joined by her husband, Jerome, and their daughters, Alexis and Angel.
The restaurant sits near the Harrisburg Mall in the TecPort Business Center complex with neighbors Lin Hibachi Buffet Grill and Quechua’s Peruvian Rotisserie Chicken & Cuisine.
“People always said ‘You cook so good,’” Smith said.
After catering for several years, Smith decided to make the leap to full-service restaurant. Feed Your Soul’s menu is lengthy and everything, even desserts, are made from scratch. (Although, Smith admits she doesn’t make the cheesecake.)
She said buys vegetables, peels and cuts them and doesn’t use canned vegetables.
“It’s a lot of work, but makes a big difference. I was trying to feed people what I would serve to my family and no less,” Smith said.
So far, customers are gravitating toward the pig feet, catfish, wings and smothered pork chops made with gravy and caramelized onions. Rib dinners and racks of ribs (priced $14.99 to $21.99) also score high points.
“The secret is they bake until they fall of the bone,” Smith said.
Diners can pick from several barbecue sauces such as mild, hot and sweet.
There’s a full menu of sandwiches and burgers including a shrimp cheese steak made with thinly sliced ribeye and Jumbo Gulf shrimp blended with seasonings. Caramelized onions are optional.
Those craving a burger can order an all-beef burger, mushroom Swiss, the A.M. with applewood bacon and sunny side up egg or barbecue burger with bacon, onion ring and barbecue sauce. Prices start at $9.99.
Seafood such as catfish and crab is sourced from Jessup, Maryland. Options include fried or broiled jumbo lump crab cake ($19.99), broiled salmon ($16.99) and Jumbo stuffed shrimp ($26.99). Meals are served with choice of two sides and a roll or corn muffin.
Side options run the gamut from candied sweet potatoes to baked beans, cole slaw, mac n’ cheese, collard greens and green beans. Daily cake and pie specials fill a dessert case with strawberry shortcake, banana bread pudding, ice cream and milkshakes.
Diners can take a seat in the cozy dining room or place their orders to go.
“We’re just a hardworking family striving for excellence,” Smith said.
The restaurant is open noon – 9 p.m. Monday, noon-9 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday. Closed on Tuesdays. Phone is 717-970-3055.
