A talented baker has floored guests at her mother’s 60th birthday party by designing a sewing basket cake so lifelike they thought it was real until she cut into it.

The Australian woman, who shared the design on social media, decided to build the intricate treat out of six $4 Coles white chocolate mud cakes, homemade buttercream and store bought fondant.

‘The basket weave is piped buttercream and all other decorations are fondant. This was presented to her on a vintage Singer Sewing Machine – her birthday present,’ the woman said.

‘It was made from Coles mud cakes with the iced tops mashed up and used for filling in the sides of the basket and for the insides of the balls of wool and pin cushion.’

She described spending more than 20 painstaking making it, including three hours on the basket weave alone.

‘But it was worth it and I was chuffed at how many people didn’t realise it was a cake until I cut into it,’ she said.

Commenters on Facebook are calling it the ‘best cake they’ve ever seen’.

‘I just showed my partner and he didn’t believe it was cake until I showed him the before pics,’ one woman said.

‘Way to set the bar too high for the rest of us. Absolutely amazing! You should be so chuffed with how it turned out,’ said another.

A third added: ‘I know how long it takes to do fondant and buttercream work. It’s a fantastic job you have done.’

There was plenty of sewing-related paraphernalia included on the cake, including needles, knitting equipment, string, scissors and even a measuring tape.

One person was quizzical about why she cut into the masterpiece at all, explaining that it should have been left as a piece of art.
