A vegetarian from Hull was left “shocked” after discovering Burger King’s plant-based Rebel Whopper is not suitable for vegetarians.
The non-meat Rebel Whopper was launched earlier this month becoming the fast-food chains first plant-based burger.
Using a non-meat burger patty with all the trimmings of an original Whopper, to the eye it may seem a suitable option for those who do not eat meat.
However, one Hull customer was “shocked” to discover that the plant-based patty may be cooked on the same grill as the original Whopper – making it unsuitable for vegetarians.
The leaflet, which reads “100% Whopper no beef”, also states: “The Rebel Whopper is plant-based, however, it is cooked on the same broiler as our original Whopper to deliver the same unique flame-grilled taste.
“Due to shared cooking equipment it may not be suitable for vegetarians.”
One customer, who did not wish to be named, says that the warning should be “more obvious”.
She said: “I was not eating it because I am not a vegetarian for animal rights, for me it is more about diet.
“But I was shocked to discover the small print and I imagine vegetarians who are against killing animals would be against eating them.
“They should make it more obvious so you can make a more informed decision.”
At its launch earlier this month, the fast food chain said that the Rebel Whopper was aimed at “flexitarians” for people who eat meat but are cutting down.
Burger King marketing director Katie Evans described it as “a game changer”, saying: “We wanted our first plant-based Whopper to replicate the indulgence and flame-grilled taste of the real thing as closely as possible, and we’re thrilled with the result.
“We’re delighted to satisfy the demand for this highly-anticipated product and finally bring the Rebel to the UK.”
