NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — College Ave Café will officially open its doors Tuesday inside the Eva and Arie Halpern Hillel House at 70 College Ave. in the heart of the Rutgers University’s campus.
The café will serve a wide variety of kosher cuisine that is both healthy and delicious.
Executive Chef Shirley Poliker, who trained at The French Culinary Institute, has created a menu that combines traditional comfort food with a healthy, modern spin. Open to the public, College Ave Café’s menu is kosher, dairy, and vegetarian, with, many vegan choices. Options include soups, sandwiches, pizza, Beyond burgers, and salads.
Of note is the vegetarian/parve matzo ball soup and Rutgers’ famous ‘Fat Sandwiches’– made kosher and vegetarian. Brunch will be available on Sunday starting Feb. 9 featuring bagels, French toast, sandwiches and shakshuka, an Israeli favorite.
The café is operated by Rutgers Hillel and supports the organization’s mission of creating a community for the Jewish students who attend the University. The restaurant is open to all and expects to serve a broad swath of the Rutgers and New Brunswick communities, as well as kosher diners from across central New Jersey and beyond.
“We are excited to provide a place for our students where they can feel at home, whether it is sitting in front of the fireplace with a cup of homemade soup, or grabbing a slice of pizza or a sandwich as they are heading to class or studying,” said Rutgers Hillel Executive Director, Andrew Getraer. “With the rise of vegetarian and vegan lifestyle, the café offers an excellent option for anyone looking for a meatless meal, not only the Jewish community. We want to let everyone know our doors are open and all are welcome.”
College Ave Cafe is dairy kosher under the strict rabbinical supervision of OU Kosher.
College Ave Cafe is will be open Monday – Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and for Sunday Brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cafe is closed on Saturday. For more information, visit collegeavecafe.com.
