With the number of youngsters who are taking to home baking as a profession escalating, we are definitely spoilt for choice. Nonetheless, it’s a difficult choice to make as credibility, hygiene and other factors that ideally a home baker is supposed to maintain comes into question.
In comes homebakers.co.in. Started in November 2018 by Anjana Lath and Anuradha Lath, it is an online portal that has over 1,500 home bakers from 80 cities across India and is a go-to website when you are looking for customised cakes and their credibility. “In India, home baking is an unorganised sector, while in other countries, like the UK, one needs a license and adhere to certain hygiene standards,” says Anuradha and adds that the duo started this platform to bring some semblance of order into the field of home baking.
Best of the best
Just a month ago, this Hyderabad-based start-up launched three lists — India’s Top 100 Home Bakers, City’s Top 25 Home Bakers and India’s Best Baking Brands. Basically, it was a list that featured the best of the best in the country — bakers who made the best fondant, had the best flavours or whipped up the best cream. It also featured categories like the best stand mixer, the best baking oven and so on.
Who judged the home bakers? 15 top-notch cake artists, bakers and chefs. On what criterion? Basic qualifications, certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the number of competitions won, among other things. The nominees were asked to fill online forms, submit three of their best creations and were judged based on this. As many as 1,500 participants registered to be a part of this first-of-its-kind curated list of the crème de la crème among home bakers.
Through this listing, the home bakers had the chance to gain recognition and attract new customers. While in mid-September 2019 the registrations were declared open, the results were announced last month.
What the judges have to say
“The entire nation is in a state of transfer from academic intelligence to skilling which is very relevant at this stage. It is important to bring home bakers to an organised sector of hospitality. This could be the first step of it,” says Chef Avin Thaliath, Founder, Lavonne Academy of Baking Science and Pastry Arts in Bengaluru. While talking about the skills of the winners, the Head Judge says, “As a representative who had spent long years in the industry, I should admit the fact that the skill levels of these home bakers and cake artists was beyond imagination. The industry and the nation are really proud to have these talents in our country.”
Talking about how this list could make a difference, Ashwini Sarabhai, India’s top cake artist and judge says, “This has definitely given a boost to all the bakers knowing where they really stand and how they need to move their business ahead. From the client-side, it gives an assurance of the quality of the baker.”
