Portage County residents have a brand-new Mexican restaurant to try out — Coyote Mexican Grill and Cantina, located at 2500 Route 59 in Franklin Township.
Owned by Jaime Angel and managed by his brother Ramiro Angel, the restaurant is largely a family operation, as is its sister restaurant near Chagrin Falls.
“The menu every day has fresh food of good quality,” said Ramiro. “Also, I think that the portions for each person are very good for the price.”
He said the location along Route 59 midway between Kent and Ravenna is a solid spot for the restaurant.
“Route 59 has a lot of traffic,” he said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for people driving to have lunch. The location is very good because you have Walmart, the apartments and the children’s hospital.”
Server Lucero Angel said she believes it’s close enough to Kent to attract students, as well.
“We thought it was a nice place because the college is close,” she said. “On the weekends it’s been really busy, but it’s been a little quieter on the weekdays.”
Ramiro said some of the popular menu items, which are all from family recipes, are pork carnitas and coyote fajitas.
The pork carnitas includes slow-roasted pork served on flour tortillas with lettuce, guacamole, pico de gallo, jalapeños, rice and beans, and the coyote fajitas features steak, chicken and shrimp served on a sizzling hot plate with rice, beans, salad, source cream pico de gallo and tortillas on the side.
The menu also includes submenus of chicken, steak, seafood and vegetarian entrees, as well as a variety of combination options.
The dessert menu features a variety of items, including flan, a Mexican custard in vanilla syrup with whipped cream, and xango, a cheesecake wrapped in a flour tortilla, deep fried and served with vanilla ice cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Other dessert items include fried ice cream, el canelo, sopapilla and churros.
Ramiro said he will likely set a grand opening celebration in the future. He also said he’s planning to offer karaoke on Saturday evenings, which have been popular at the family’s Chagrin Falls restaurant.
