GOODRICH, MI — Located in Goodrich, which is south of Flint in Genesee County, Cranberries Café is a hidden gem that offers a creative menu, lively atmosphere and great dessert.
It was a Top 10 for Michigan’s Best Dessert in 2016.
The star of the show?
Everyone loves their rich and decadent Chocolate Cake, which just might be the perfect splurge on any day of the week (and not just on National Chocolate Cake Day, which is Jan. 27).
As the story goes, owner Patty Plant was in a bind when her food supplier discontinued offering a popular chocolate cake. One thing led to another, and pastry chef Charlotte Parker made her own version.
“I said, ‘Let me give it a whirl,” Parker said when we caught up with her today.
A former computer programmer who went back to college to pursue a career as a baker, Parker discovered that everyone loved her creation — a six-layer cake that rivals anything you will ever try. It’s sweet, of course, but not over the top, and it’s balanced to perfection.
The secret? “I’m so picky about being precise with the ingredients because you want it to be consistent. It should taste the same every time. That’s a big part of baking,” she said.
The cake costs $10.95 a slice (the same price as in 2016) and is enough for everyone to share.
“We say it’s about a layer per person if you have a group of six,” she said with a laugh.
She makes about 3-4 cakes a week, and she gets eight slices from a 10-inch cake. You can order a full cake for $75.
In addition to this decadent chocolate cake, the restaurant serves sandwiches, seafood, soup and other lunch and dinner items. The historic building (built in 1917) also offers a full bar, plus live entertainment. Owner Patty is a big supporter of the Goodrich community so it’s not unusual for her to host groups and fundraisers. She even periodically puts on dinner theater events with different themes.
