After 94 years in business, the owner of Stookey’s Famous Bar-B-Que on Route 11 in West Nanticoke said Tuesday he plans to retire and he is trying to sell his restaurant.
Ralph Frank, 70, said his grandparents started the business. His parents later ran it and he took it over in 1996 after spending much of his life at the restaurant.
The most popular menu item at Stookey’s is the pork barbecue sandwich and his customers come from all over, he said. His family has been serving the same sauce recipe since 1926.
Frank said a buyer formerly was interested but the deal fell through and he is now trying to sell the restaurant through Lewith & Freeman Real Estate for $465,000. Frank has a son but he’s not going into the business, he said.
“I have to sell it for any chance for it to stay open but that’s not guaranteed,” Frank said. “If somebody wants to buy it and run Stookey’s, that would be ideal. It’s efficient. It’s profitable.”
His decision to sell the restaurant comes after Gov. Tom Wolf recently announced that the state will close the nearby State Correctional Institution at Retreat, resulting in the displacement of more than 400 jobs in Luzerne County.
Frank said many of the employees were his customers. He would see them “virtually every day,” and the closure will take a toll on business, he said.
“There definitely would be an impact,” Frank said. “I was trying to support that staying open.”
Since the ad about Stookey’s being up for sale went online, it was shared multiple times on Facebook and Frank said he received several calls.
The sale would include real estate, the equipment and the inventory.
The ad listing Stookey’s for sale encourages interested buyers to “continue the tradition” and it describes the property as a “fantastic business opportunity for someone looking for consistent cash flow.”
