A mouth-watering (free) display of the cakes of your childhood – straight from the Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book.
It’s been a long time coming, but the cakes of your childhood have finally been recognised as the pieces of high art they always were. This year, 75 cakes from the Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book – the staple of Australian birthday parties – will be brought to life under one roof.
From the chocolate-finger-fringed jelly-filled pool to that demonic chip-billed duck, your favourite iced confections will be given pride of place at the NGV’s Ian Potter Centre. Some will be reimagined; others will be in their original glory.
Guest bakers whose efforts are on display include the team from Beatrix bakery, Chrissie Swan and Lord Mayor Sally Capp. Author Pamela Clark will be leading tours of the display on March 21 and 22 for those who are interested in what went into the design and construction process behind each cake (or for anyone who wants to meet an Australian hero).
Cupcakes inspired by the iconic cakes will be available from the cafe at Deakin Edge, along with the opportunity to decorate your own if you’re feeling inspired.
