MISSOULA — MTN News is continuing to bring you coverage of restaurants and businesses that are still open in the community.
One popular bakery is struggling to stay afloat.
Businesses across Missoula are doing everything they can to stay open. Asking regulars to drink their coffee outside, leaving dining rooms completely empty.
Bernice’s Bakery is usually a packed social cafe.
Friday morning, customers gathered on the sidewalk, six feet apart.
Owner Missy Kelleher says the bakery is usually busiest in the spring, gearing up for Easter, graduation, and wedding season. But sales are declining.
“We don’t know what’s going to happen. In terms of, are we going to turn the corner by Easter, I really doubt it,” said Kelleher.
Chairs are put away, tables are pushed back. Tape on the floor reminds people to keep their space. Temperature logs and safety signs are the new normal.
Kelleher says they have an inbox full of canceled wedding consultations, and she’s taking out of savings to pay her employees.
“We plan to stay open as long as we possibly can,” said Kelleher.
The bakery is offering pick up and delivery, and adding soup to the menu.
“Everyone I know is reaching out through social media to lift each other up. If anything good can come out of this, perhaps the world will be a better place,” said Kelleher.
Bernice’s is waiving delivery fees on some orders.
