BURLINGTON CITY — Dr. Anthony Fauci has become the face of medical science during televised presidential task force briefings on the coronavirus pandemic.
Now Fauci’s face has become a hot take-out item at JB Bakery in Burlington City.
Following in the footsteps of a Brooklyn bakery to honor the infectious disease expert who regularly and candidly speaks to the country, the bakery has made a special Dr. Fauci cream doughnut topped with his photo.

Bakery owner Stephen Simon said the pastry has been flying out of the 712 High St. store by the hundreds since he first put them on the shelves for sale Friday.
Stephen Simon, owner of JB Bakery in Burlington City, talks about his hand made Mardi Gras treats such as King Cakes and Fasnacht Donuts.
“I had been trying to think of a pastry theme related to the fight against the virus epidemic, but it seemed it might be too insensitive or inappropriate. Then on a headline news station I saw that a New York bakery had put Dr. Fauci’s picture on a doughnut and I thought, hey, I can do that, too,” Simon explained.
He described Dr. Fauci as a “beacon of truth” in combating COVID-19. The doctor is director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases and also has been involved in research and treatment for H1N1 flu, Ebola, HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses during a 50-year career.
“The doughnut is providing a little levity and a diversion that lifts everybody’s spirit,” Simon said.
He and the bakers made a special butterscotch cream for the filling that Simon labels “COVID Cream.”
Fauci’s face is on an edible pastry sheet and is encircled with frosting and what Simon says are his “quarantini” sprinkles.
Residents in the Medford area are lucky because Simon’s sister, Elizabeth Conway, is making home deliveries of the Fauci-faced treats and other baked goods. Others who want home delivery are using services like DoorDash.
“I have many first responders and nurses who come to the bakery and they are buying the COVID Cream doughnuts and taking them back to work with them. Some of the nurses told me they are familiar with Dr. Fauci’s research work,” Simon said.
