REPUBLIC — For 20 years, a local home-baker has grown her businesses sending baked goods to soldiers overseas and now she is looking to expand.
Lisa Handshoe of Republic is the owner of Handshoe Cakes and Cookies, 6085 E. SR 18, and of Project Cookies from Home — which sends large flat-rate boxes of cookies to soldiers serving overseas.
Handshoe said they have sent 580 boxes to date, with 27,000 cookies.
Handshoe said she started her bakery in August 1999.
“I wanted to get out of the factory and stay home with my small children, Handshoe said. “I began offering custom cakes as well as wedding cakes.”
Handshoe said the business then grew to offering cakes, cookies, cupcakes and holiday goods.
The bakery is located in her garage, which she opened about five-years ago.
Handshoe has put together a GoFundMe campaign to help her expand.
“My hope is to be able to remodel the entire garage into a bakery,” she said. “To offer cake decorating supplies and accessories, consignment shelves to local crafters and more space for my baked goods.”
Handshoe she would also like to have cake or cookie decorating seminars for children and parents.
Handshoe is also hope to purchase a commercial oven.
“This will help with my business baking, but more importantly with baking more efficiently,” Handshoe said. “I pride myself at keeping baked goods affordable.”
Handshoe said she hopes more people come to learn about the love and care she puts into each order. She hand-pipes her cookies and bakes her goods on-site and makes her own buttercream frosting.
“I have always been a strong supporter of the communities I serve, donating goods and funds to hundreds of benefits over the years,” she said.
Handshoe is a co-organizer for the 5K for Freedom event that takes place every year at Hedges-Boyer Park. Money raised from this event goes to several veterans PTSD and suicide awareness groups.
