These are strange times everywhere, but especially in the restaurant world, where the landscape seems to change day by day.

So many things come across our desks every day that it is nearly impossible to keep up, but we thought we’d start a new column to attempt to bring you all the most up-to-date information we have on new takeout, fundraisers, pop-ups, restaurant closures (whether temporary or permanent) and more. Here’s what we know right now:

MEAT FOR SALE

If you’re missing restaurant-prepared duck, or have been itching to try your hand at preparing one at home, you’re in luck. Meritage is selling birds from Au Bon Canard, one of the most regarded duck and foie gras growers in the country. The ducks and foie are available via pre-order through the restaurant’s website (meritage-stpaul.com/duck-sale) for a few more weeks. Chef Russell Klein has also posted how-to videos on preparing duck on that site.

Or maybe you are really jonesing for some Peterson meats, the delicious, raised-with-care beef and pork served at so many local restaurants. With the slowing of their wholesale restaurant business, the company has ramped up its online sales, offering beef, pork and mixed “family faves” packages for delivery. Sole Mio Ristorante has closed permanently. The Woodbury Italian restaurant posted a letter on its Facebook page announcing the closure, along with a video from chef/owner Angelo Montes saying goodbye and thank you to patrons. The restaurant operated for nearly eight years.

“It’s just a really sad time for me and Teresa,” Montes said in the video. “It’s like our dream just went away.”

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

A St. Paul institution, Mama’s Pizza, had originally planned to temporarily close during the coronavirus pandemic. But when the phone started ringing off the hook from loyal customers, the 56-year-old eatery decided to reopen for takeout. But fans will have to wait a few weeks.
