Urban Taco has opened in Lakewood Ranch, currently offering an array of make-your-own Mexican foods to go. Brothers Peter and Doug Vendernoord, who also own Riverhouse Waterfront Restaurant in Palmetto, which is temporarily closed, also are planning a sister Urban Taco in Venice at 1617 U.S. 41-Bypass, with plans to open in early summer.

“We thought it would be a good idea to open during this slow volume time so we could work out the kinks,” said Peter Vendernoord, “but our first days open, we have been amazed at the overwhelming response.”

The Lakewood Ranch restaurant at 11161 East State Road 70, which was formerly Mojo’s Real Cuban, will eventually seat 40 customers while the Venice location will accommodate 80 diners plus seating on an outdoor patio. At the Lakewood Ranch location, by the end of April, customers may call-in orders or order online and pick up their food inside the restaurant at a separate designated area.

The new restaurant offers guacamole or queso build-your-own tacos, burritos, bowls and quesadillas. Patrons may choose from 10 proteins including carnitas, chorizo, mojo chicken and “kickin’ shrimp,” to be finished off with choice of toppings (15) including arugula, pickled onions, jalapeno, garlic cilantro sauce and mango habanero.

There are sides like beans and rice or corn salsa, plus fried ice cream or churros for dessert. In addition, there are children’s options and assorted beverages such as sodas, lattes, espresso, beer, wine and an “urban margarita.”

Located at 11161 East State Road 70, Urban Taco may be reached at 941-253-0911, and orders are available Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, visit
