The owners of Dewey Beach’s Lighthouse Restaurant said they are devastated by the blaze that badly damaged the popular resort town eatery.
“We are devastated by the news of last night’s fire at the Lighthouse Restaurant in Dewey Beach,” said a statement issued by the Lighthouse Cove Development Co. “Thankfully, the majority of the damage was confined to the restaurant, and the remainder of the redevelopment, including the Hyatt Place hotel, Residences at Lighthouse Cove and Lighthouse Cove Event Center, remain intact.
“Most importantly, there were no injuries sustained.”
Firefighters from Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach and Lewes battled the blaze at the restaurant, at 124 Dickinson St., on Thursday evening.
The fire was reported about 9:55 p.m.
Arriving firefighters could see the two-story building engulfed in flames and partially collapsed.
Firefighters were on the scene for more than three hours.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office estimated damages at $750,000. It said it was still investigating the cause of the fire.
The bayside restaurant, which features an iconic lighthouse, was demolished early last year and replaced with a new restaurant that was scheduled to open this summer.
The construction at the Lighthouse is part of a multiyear, multimillion-dollar development effort that brought Delaware’s first Hyatt Place to the location in 2013.
“This is a developing situation with limited details,” the development company said in its statement. “We look forward to working with the State Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate this terrible loss.
“We are greatly appreciative of all the support we have received during this difficult time and will share more information at the appropriate time.”
