Kent baker Sarah Callow pulled out all the stops when she created a special cake to mark Captain Tom Moore’s 100th birthday today.

She spent three days at her home in Dargate, near Faversham, on the two-feet tall culinary work of art.

Sarah, 52, who was born and raised on the Isle of Sheppey, said: “My boys are now 19 and 25 and tell me they are too old for birthday cakes. So I decided to make one for a special person – and they don’t come any more special than Captain Tom.”

However, she needed some last-minute editing when it was confirmed the Army veteran was being made an honorary colonel for raising £32 million for the NHS.

At his home he celebrated with a flypast by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, thousands of cards, including one from the Queen, and another cake with a Spitfire perched on top.

Sarah’s was a representation of the war hero complete with a sound box hidden inside which plays his number one song You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Her only problem is what to do with the cake now.

She said: “I have been overwhelmed with everybody’s support to try to get this cake to the amazing Colonel Tom. I would love it if he could see it. But it looks like I will now be donating it to either a hospital or charity. Any money I get will go to Colonel Tom’s charity.”

She was planning to sing happy birthday to him tonight at 7.59pm (Thursday) just before the national Clap For Carers.

Her brother, Swale Cllr Simon Fowle (Con, Queenborough and Halfway), said: “I am very proud of my sister.”

Sarah runs her own cake-baking business called Love Sarah J. She is also an accomplished artist.

Capt Tom, who was treated for a broken hip and skin cancer, initially aimed to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together and said he set about raising the money “for the sake of the nurses and the NHS we have, because they are doing such a magnificent job.”
