Award-winning pitmaster to open restaurant in Newburgh – Times Herald-Record

CITY OF NEWBURGH – Two years and eight locations later, Hudson Valley native Ed Randolph has finally found a permanent home for his award-winning barbecue creations.

Randolph’s catering business featuring his signature southern-inspired barbecue dishes has operated on the road and in small, leased commercial buildings since 2013.

The new Handsome Devil BBQ restaurant, owned by Randolph and his wife, Noelle, is slated to open later this summer at 3 Corwin Court in the City of Newburgh after construction and gathering restrictions from the state’s PAUSE program are lifted, Randolph said.

“I’m relieved,” Randolph said Monday after explaining how he attempted to move the business into seven other locations in Montgomery, New Windsor, Newburgh and Dutchess County that fell through for various reasons.

He will have to wait until state restrictions on work and social gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic are lifted before they can start construction.

Randolph estimates it will take about two months to renovate the 5,200-square-foot building, putting its opening date somewhere around late June, if everything goes according to plan.

Randolph’s barbecue has won his Handsome Devil business several prestigious festival awards. He won a special “Grills On! Game On!” episode of the Food Network’s popular reality-TV show “Chopped” last year.

The new restaurant will have a minimum of 12 employees and offer a combination of communal seating, small tables and a bar area.

He still plans to take his grilling talents around the country to compete in festivals, like the Memphis World Championship Barbecue Cooking Festival that was originally scheduled for this weekend, but has since been moved to October because of the coronavirus.

“Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something,” Randolph wrote in a public Facebook post to his Handsome Devil LLC and personal pages announcing the restaurant’s new location. “You have to dream and you need to protect it…. We will have a forever home that the community can enjoy and our team can grow.”
