History Spotlight: Tony’s Bakery – The News-Messenger

Restaurant News

In 1926, Anthony Szymanowski (1889-1965) bought the Sunshine Bakery next to his home at 709 White Road. Thus began Tony’s Bakery, a Fremont household name for a half century, that over the years grew to more than 300 employees. This early picture shows the transition from Sunshine to Tony’s Bakery in the 1920s. The family sold the business to Nickles Bakery in 1974, nine years after Szymanowski’s death. The buildings on White Road are empty now, but Tony’s Bakery is still recalled in Fremont today with many fond memories.
