Ruggeri’s Lake Country Bakery was forced to close its doors because of the pandemic, but owner Andy Ruggeri isn’t going away.
Ruggeri announced he will reopen as an Italian market.
Ruggeri’s Italian Market will open May 27 at 161 W. Wisconsin Ave., Pewaukee.
While the bakery had many loyal customers, COVID-19 forced the cancellation of large celebrations like weddings, graduations, birthday parties and other events.

“Everything closed and was canceled,” Ruggeri said. “I had to give refunds, so it made it very difficult to move ahead. I thought I would have to totally close everything and just go find a job or something.”
Ruggeri bought the bakery, which was then known as Cakes While U Wait, in 2019.
Drawing on his decades of experience as a chef, the carry-out Italian market will feature spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, salad, Italian bread and tiramisu. Ruggeri ran Ruggeri’s Ristorante in Delafield for eight years.
“I hope I have a following still,” Ruggeri said. “I’m actually using the exact recipes that I did there. I’m going to be starting off with a small menu with mostly pasta, salad, tiramisu, lasagna and a couple things like that.”
The market will also offer ham and rolls on Sundays, as well as some of the popular cookies from the bakery.
“This is a time people are really looking for easy, high quality take-out food that the whole family will enjoy,” Ruggeri said. “I hope that many of our customers and friends from over the years will enjoy our cooking as we all get through this time together.”
Ruggeri said he hopes to offer pizza at some point.
“I was known for my pizza,” Ruggeri said. “But not right away. I don’t have money for a pizza oven.”
Ruggeri said he will be the only employee at the Italian market in the beginning, but he hopes to hire people in the future.
The market will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Customers can order by phone for pick up of hot food, or stop in and browse the cold section of prepared foods.
