Take a look at this vibrant new collection made with 100% recycled materials
During this COVID-19 pandemic, to reduce the risk of transmission, numerous restaurants and businesses have temporarily stopped using reusable cups and cutlery. It is estimated that this has resulted in an increase in the use of single-use plastics by 20-35%. This is where a new product series by American singer and entrepreneur Pharrell Willaims comes in. His creative brand I Am Other has partnered with design studio Pentatonic to conceptualise a completely sustainable, out-of-home dining kit made from recycled CDs known as The Pebble. It comprises a fork, knife, spoon, straw and chopsticks that fit into a smooth, curved case; it also features a lanyard and carabiner to allow for ease in transportation. The entire set can be recycled; and if discarded, its materials, that are biodegradable do not contribute to landfills.
A Responsible Future
The Pebble is the first product in ‘otherware’. Pentatonic is the world’s leading circular economy company, which focuses upon removing single-use products from consumption. “Our team has been super concerned about the seemingly unstoppable flow of single-use plastics, especially around food and drinks. So we decided to get together with Pentatonic to do something about it, in a fresh, creative and relevant way,” states Darla Vaughn, Partner, I Am Other.
The Pebble is made of 100% recycled materials including CD’s (polycarbonate), and polypropylene from sources including used food packaging. Pentatonic has estimated that approximately 10 billion CDs and DVDs have been discontinued in the US alone since 2005 as people have switched to streaming services. The cutlery comprises recycled Polypropylene and stainless steel. “The wasted CDs are first sorted and cleaned, the metallic layer is removed and the purified polycarbonate is then shredded. This shredded polycarbonate is formed into pellets, which undergo testing before colour is added. With the pigments added, the pellets are heated and precision-formed on high-grade custom toolings, an industrial and highly optimised process. Once cooled and set, the three components are manually and hygienically assembled into The Pebble case under strict clean-room conditions,” says Jamie Hall, Co-founder, Pentatonic.
Additionally, not only is The Pebble made of recycled material, it can be entirely re-recycled. Pentatonic pledges to trade back and recycle every item when the customer is done using it, so that it can be brought back to life again as something else.
For a Good Cause
For the launch of The Pebble, a limited edition yellow case will be released to highlight the support of Yellow, Inc., a non-profit foundation founded by Pharrell Williams. I Am Other’s proceeds from all Otherware sales will be donated to Yellow, Inc.
