It’s been 10 months since Cartwright’s, an upscale restaurant in Cave Creek, closed its doors. But soon the town, which is located about 45 minutes north of downtown Phoenix, will welcome a new dining destination to the historic space.
Pomodoro Italian Grill & Seafood will open in the former Cartwright’s location on Sept. 28. The restaurant comes from a trio of owners including husband-and-wife team Federico Venturini and Viola Tagliaferri and partner Philip Igneri. It will be a “fusion between an American steakhouse and high-end Italian” restaurant, Venturini says.
“We’re going to bring a much different style of food and cooking and taste that I think the people here have been craving and miss,” Igneri told The Arizona Republic.
What to expect at Pomodoro Italian Grill
Venturini and Tagliaferri might be familiar to north Valley diners as the couple also owns
Pizzicata, a pizzeria in Carefree. All three owners also live in the area. Igneri has been a Carefree resident for two decades, while the husband-and-wife team moved to Arizona from the Umbria region in central Italy about a year and a half ago.
Tagliaferri will be the restaurant’s chef and primarily responsible for the menu, which she says will highlight authentic Italian dishes that aren’t commonly found at other restaurants in the Valley.
Diners can expect options such as Florentine steak, stuffed and fried zucchini flowers, cioppino and truffle and porcini mushroom ravioli, she says.
“I think it’s gonna be good because the menu that we’ve created, there’s something for everybody,” Tagliaferri says.
To go along with the Italian cuisine menu, Pomodoro will also serve an extensive wine list featuring a majority of wines imported from Italy. Other selections will highlight wineries in California’s Napa region and guests will benefit from the guidance of the restaurant’s on-staff sommelier.
Beyond the wine list, Igneri says Pomodoro will also round out its bar program with a “great selection” of whiskey and bourbon. The bar will stay open until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights to offer customers a “speakeasy” type of atmosphere, he says.
Pomodoro will open on Monday, Sept. 28, which is also the one-year anniversary of Pizzicata.
To start, Pomodoro will not offer takeout and will limit dine-in service to about 50% capacity. The large space can usually sit more than 170 diners but will be limited to about 100 guests in an attempt to limit the spread of COVID-19. Tables will be spaced to allow for social distancing.
Diners can make reservations on OpenTable.
