NEWTON, MA — A group of restaurant owners have cooked up an idea to entice you go out to dinner in Newton amid pandemic, in an effort to keep the businesses around.

From Oct. 15 to Nov. 15, you can enter to win prizes – up to $200 worth – for ordering food and posting about it on social media at one of 60 area restaurants. Baramour’s Arpit Patel and Cook’s Paul Turano and the local chamber of commerce were among the group that helped make the idea a reality.

“Our main goal was to remind people that these restaurants are around,” Patel said. “These are places where so many people make memories, celebrating something as simple as a birthday or a job promotion —or even catching up with an old friend. We wanted to remind people what restaurants mean for each community.”

During the past seven months local restaurants have been scrambling to pay bills and stay open. Several area restaurants have had to close and more are facing the possibility in the months ahead.

“Everyone is definitely worried about the winter and we’re just taking it month by month and we’re hoping that there’s enough support locally that we can get through the winter and be there on the other side of the year,” Patel said.

In the face of uncertainty chambers of commerces, and local governments across the state have been coming up with campaigns to help keep the lights on.

In August, a Newton and Needham restaurant collaborative, supported by the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce took notice of various contests to promote local dining in Concord and Arlington.

“We talked to Concord town officials about how they pitched their program and they said it was successful,” he said. “It seemed like an easy idea to pursue something similar.”

The collaborative adapted the contest to fit Newton and Needham, got several restaurants to participate, gathered donations and are set to launch the contest this week.

Any time you visit one of more than 60 participating restaurants between Oct. 15 and Nov. 15, post a photo of it to Instagram or Twitter with #keepmakingmemories or add your photo to this form you’ll be entered into three drawings each week. Prizes include $25 restaurant gift cards or restaurant themed prizes in Newton and Needham and $50 gift cards for those who submit an entry every day for seven days in a row. There will also be a grand prize drawing of a dinner for six, worth up to $200 for anyone who submits an entry each day of the week for the month.

The businesses also hope that by having regular people posting to social media that they visited a restaurant it will help influence others to do the same.

“At the end of the day we are all better off when we all survive,” Patel told Patch.

He added that the hope is to have people continuously and actively choose to dine out more than they usually do, everything from buying your morning coffee to dining out for dinner.

“Our goal is to have people continuously decide to support local,” he said. “More than usual.”

When this contest is over, the group is working on plans to help restaurants around the holidays.
