NEWARK – We’ve all heard word of mouth is the best advertising, and so it has been for Josey Rutherford and her Simply Sweet Bakery.

“As a kid I always loved to cook and bake,” she said. “I think a big part of that came from doing 4-H as a kid. But I never knew I was going to end up as a baker until I got to middle school. That’s when I truly started to bake rather than cook.”

“At first, I was just baking for family,” she noted. “Then word of me baking got out fast and I soon started baking for friends and others.”

“In my first year out of high school,” she continued, “I made the name Simply Sweet Bakery official by making it an LLC. I created a Facebook and Instagram page where I could show off my work and after that, I had a lot of other people reach out to me wanting to place an order.”

Rutherford was born and raised in Newark and went to Licking Valley for all her schooling. She graduated from high school in 2018, then went to Zane State to receive a business management entrepreneurship degree. She also attended The French Pastry School in Chicago where she received two different certificates.

“After college,” she said, “I decided to stop working at my coffee shop job and was baking from my house full-time. I was very limited to equipment and supplies when I was working from home because I only had a small space in my parents’ kitchen. We all agreed it was time for my own space, so we made it happen!”

Simply Sweet Bakery opened at 692 West Church Street with a “something different” menu.

“I wanted to create a happy place for everyone to stop in on their way to work,” she said, “to grab a cup of good coffee and some goodies to take along with them. Something different about my coffee is that my latte menu is completely based off of desserts such as a chocolate truffle, white chocolate raspberry cheesecake and pecan pie. I wanted to have something different that no place around here had!”

“I also offer cupcakes, cookies, scones, pecan rolls, cinnamon rolls and baked donuts daily,” she added. “They aren’t your traditional donuts that are placed in a fryer but rather baked in the oven. Everything is baked fresh daily in the morning.”

“Her baked goods are simply delicious,” assessed said Brooke Walpole, a customer and friend. “My favorites are the cinnamon roll and her cappuccino cupcakes!”

“I’ve known Josey for most of her life,” Walpole continued, “and have been a customer on countless occasions through the years! It’s amazing to watch her dreams come true with all of her hard work and dedication.”

“I’m blessed that I’ve created my lifelong dream at only 20 years old,” Rutherford noted. “I’ve had a lot of support and help from my family in the making of this bakery. I also have an amazing customer base that has always supported me!”
